The basic difference between Joomla and Silverstripe is extra functionality added to Silverstripe regarding to website themes and backend reusability.
If a user is satisfied by the old pattern design provided by Joomla then he can use it to maintain contents on his website. But if the user needs extra functionality over these ends, he must try Silverstripe. Silverstripe is not recommended for beginners as it may confuse the newbie. You can try hands on Joomla or directly to Silverstripe. More or less, both CMS provide the same functionality and can be used by anyone.
